| I would first find out what is causing the p0420 code. Is it actually a failing CAT on an 18 year old engine, or is it running rich due to old warn out fuel injectors, or burning oil past worn out piston rings. I would start by finding an honest mechanic who will do a compression test and clean the injectors before spending a ton of money on CAT, only to have the new ones clog up because of another problem. | |||||

| p0420 , P0430 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 459333 mi. 5.7 hemi magnum, Automatic Had the O2 censors replaced and shortly after that, received both codes. Cleared the codes and they keep returning. Using Autel meter. When reading both sensors on both banks O2B1S1, .055-.840 O2B1S2 .075-.800 O2B2S1, .055-.820 O2B2S2, .135-.820 O2 censors were changed when shorty headers were installed when changing exhaust gaskets. It's smog time... I've had people recommend swapping the censors, but sense it involves bit banks, that doesn't make sense to me. Makes more sense to me that Tybee new censors are poor quality but would rather do more diagnostics rather than just swapping out parts. Recommendations as far as testing? | |||||

| For my 2007 BMW X5, I had the latter two codes. p0420 P0430. 160,000 miles. It had a hard time accelerating past 60mph, and up hills. Had the cats changed out. Solved the problem. With yours, it may or may not be the case. Since it is accompanied with another code, which indicates the engine is running lean, P0171. I recommend looking into that problem first, and then maybe it will solve the problem downstream. Once you rule that one out, then maybe double check that your O2 sensors are genuine BMW or (OEM like Bosch I think). BMW’s seem to finicky wit ... | |||||

| ... light for p0420. Still ran pretty good unless I gave it like 50% throttle or higher. Then I went to start it after it sat for a few hours and it started missing bad and eventually led to the P0300 popping up. Now it misses absolutely horrible. When going highway speeds it runs rather good, but going below 40mph or at idle, it’ll miss horribly. I had just put new spark plugs in like 200 miles ago. I’ve ran Lucas fuel treatment in it as well and the fuel filter has been changed maybe 600 miles ago. Any ideas? | |||||

| Hi Scotty, I just moved to Spring, TX from Europe so I am not familiar with the US car repair process. I have a 2004 Toyota Camry LE V6 3.0L with 140k miles. Check engine light is on due to code p0420 Bank 1. Bank 1 converter needs to be replaced and Bank 2 is also showing less than ideal live data (no code yet). However all car shops that I have visited have quoted me extremely high prices. $4k for replacing all converters or $2k for replacing only the one that is giving the code. They also dont want to use after market parts (I assume they wouldnt make mu ... | |||||

| Hey Scotty, I have 2012 mitsubishi lancer 2.0L 4 cylinder engine with 119,000 miles. Recently i have been getting the code p0420, I have reset the code 4 times and have been able to go around 300-500 miles before it comes back. I hooked up a scan tool and the freeze frame data each time shows that the gas sensor has failed at an interval. I have tried cataclean which did cause the code to go away but it came back, should i try lacquer thinner, replacing the sensor, or replacing the cat? | |||||

| Why do I get a check engine light for p0420 after replacing my catalytic converter twice ? 2010 Honda Civic Lx I had my mechanic replace the catalytic converter twice. Replaced both upstream and down stream oxygen sensors. Checked for exhaust leaks. Replaced the computer (this was for another issue but I felt it could not have hurt to try to see if that would have removed the light). | |||||

| I have a 2010 Volvo XC60 T6 (turbo 3 Liter) AWD with 115K miles, I am first owner. The CEL first came on at 60k miles and shows code p0420 (Catalyst system below Efficiency Threshold (Bank1)). It is mostly on, but then intermittently goes off when the fuel gauge reads 2/3 to 1/2 full, and then comes back on again after a short time. My Volvo guy (using Volvo diagnostics) says it is most likely the catalytic converter, but how can it fluctuate between good and bad? I have used cleaners with success to get it past its emissions test, but would like the iss ... | |||||
