| That isn't necessarily the case. Did the mechanic diagnose and rule out the several other possible causes for that code? Is there an underlying engine condition such as oil burning that might have poisoned the catalyst? If they test bad that might help. (There are many videos on youtube showing how to test O2 sensors.) It is the downstream sensor that is responsible for monitoring catalyst operation. If replacement is needed only OEM sensors should be used. | |||||

| My wife’s cousin check engine light came on along with Stability Control and Cruise Control lights. He mechanic stated p0420 code was for catalytic converter. Repair will be very expensive. This Subaru has first converter welded to exhaust manifold (parts price from Auto Store was $1700 and second converter with pipe is no longer available). This car is running fine, no drop in miles per galling, no stalling, no rotten egg smell, no exhaust leaks around exhaust manifold and no rattle from first or second converter. | You more than llikely replaced the catalytic converter without actually troubleshooting, first. Catalytic converters don't "run out". They're designed for the lifetime of the car. You either had some kind of exhaust leak, or one or both oxygen sensors were bad. Oxygen sensors are on both sides of the converter to gauge the efficiency of the catalyst. Simply loading the parts cannon and hoping it works is a recipe for pulling hair out, especially when you're talking catalytic converters, that's $1800 for just one! | |||||

| Good afternoon Scott. Thank you for time. I have a 2016 Lincoln Navigator with the 3.5 V6 Ecoboost. My check engine light come out. I connect my scanner which is very basic one and said that I have codes Codes p0420, P0430, P054A and P054C. I know p0420 and P0430 are about my catalytic converter and I need to replace the right side plus the Oxigen Sensor and the Hego Sensor. Which I am planning on I just bough the sensors now I am saving to buy the right side catalytic converter. What about the P054A and P054C codes? Are those relate it to the other 2 p ... | |||||

| I have a 2010 Volvo XC60 T6 Showing p0420 with just over 200K miles. The sensors and Cat were later replaced. The code went away for a short (very short) while but keeps coming back. I drove over 200 miles to take the car to the nearest Volvo dealer who said there were other codes (P0172 & P0101) and they replaced oil trap and said the air intake had cracks which was also replaced. While driving home approx. 150 +/- miles the Check engine light came back on and the p0420 code came back. After that the Cat and 2 sensors were replaces. Almost 3 years later ... | |||||

| Hello guys back with another 1 for my wife's car she came to me saying her check engine light on so I scan it with my tool and it reads the dreaded p0420 code I recently replaced the cat in her car but she had a misfire going on from a spark plug misfire I've heard that a misfire would cause a cat to go bad?? But then I've heard it could be the 02 sensor but we ordered a new 1 of those to still p0420?? Any ideas? | |||||

| Hey Scotty I have a 2000 Toyota solara with around 104,000 miles and I have a check engine light for a p0420. Now when I go to start the car on a cold start she might stall but then catches her self and runs normal only one time did she stall completely and I had to restart her but when I did she started right up normally. I know you have a video for fixing code p0420 with lacquer thinner I have a 1 gallon can of it but I’m kinda scared to put it in my gas because I read it could damage other parts of the car but I trust you if you say it safe thank you and ... | |||||

| I have never seen temp sensors on a cat. I would verify that with contactless thermometer Did you look under your car to see if the cat was stolen? Were there any mods done to it? Look for damage to the exhaust (leaks etc) or sensors and wires. Your cats shouldn't be worn out at 94k, but if they are, and they're running hot, then you have engine problems like rich mixture or misfires. troubleshooting p0420: | |||||

| ... replacement, my CEL came on. The code was p0420. I cleared it and it came back the next day. This happened 2 more times in the same week. I ended up pulling out both O2 sensors and cleaning them with carb-cleaner. They had a bit of carbon built up on them, but I cleaned it all off and reinstalled them. This fixed the issue until tonight. Tonight, I noticed my CEL was on again. In addition, I've noticed a huge drop in gas mileage. | p0420 p0420 is usually indicative of the catalyst system. The main component of the catalyst system is the catalytic converter. The problem could be: Upstream of the catalytic converter Downstream of the catalytic converter The catalytic converter converter Out of the times I had the code, it was the catalytic converter. But make sure to rule out bad sensors, burning oil, too much fuel, incomplete combustion, etc… before changing it out, as cats are super expensive. | |||||

| 2013 Ford Explorer Limited 3.5L V6 Naturally Aspirated. Hi Scotty, I wanted to ask if this would be a reason for vacuum leak and/or a catalytic converter codes p0420 / P0430. I went to replace my spark plugs to see if it would improve idle surge, low fuel mpg and my cat code. I found both sides of my valve covers leaking into the plugs for cylinders 2 and 5. Since then, I ran some cataclean. The CEL turned off, MPG went back up to 18.3 and the Surge went away. but after about a month, the CEL is back with the Codes. | p0420 is usually the CC. Usually. When my O2 sensor went bad on my 1999 Honda Accord, there was another code that tripped. I don't remember the exact code number, but it wasn't p0420. You could try switching the upstream and downstream sensors, and see if the data moves. If it moves, it probably a bad sensor(s). If it stays the about the same, it is probably a bad cat. The cat would need to be replaced. I'd like to hear other thoughts on this... | |||||
