Should I get a 2009 Ford Escape XLT with 126,000 for $5500?

The general consensus on those is that they are OK decent cars. They generally make it to 130-150k miles trouble free but after that have problems. One thing to note would be to avoid the hybrid versions.
I personally wouldn't pay that much for a car with not a ton of life left. It could be a decent deal if was like $3000. That was also near the start of the generation and proven to have an exceptionally bad automatic transmission: https://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Escape/2009/
You can find Scotty's response above from the link @DayWalker posted, basically the same general idea.
