those are a pain in the but. You need to insert a special tool inside to release it. You can buy it pretty cheaply online though. Take apart dash and then just plug it in.

Most of the ones that I've dealt with the front ring will unscrew from the back side where the electrical is. Sometimes though I just destroy it and put a whole new one in and wire it up. Either way you have to remove the dash or at least the middle section where it is mounted.
