1997 Pathfinder CAT delete

Mr. Scotty! My son has 1997 Pathfinder. 3.3 liter V6 auto. 280,000 miles. Throwing P0420. Runs great. Local shop wants 4 grand to replace both cats and exhaust system. The exhaust system does need replacing. Utah and all. It’s hanging on for dear life.

The real question (emissions aside). I’m looking to delete the cats and redo the exhaust. I’ve been told I’d have to tune the vehicle to not recognize the cats. Is that something done through the OBD? If so. Which tool would you suggest?

Thank you sir!!!! Best YouTube channel!

I’ve been told I’d have to tune the vehicle to not recognize the cats.

if there is, the cost will be similar to new cats.

I would ignore the light, forget about "redoing" the exhaust, and just put that money towards a newer vehicle instead.

P0420 has other possible causes than bad catalytic converters, so you might want to look into those before condemning them.

Who told you that? What you'll wind up with is a permanent check engine light and converter codes. Of course you won't be able to pass an emissions check if required in your area.
