1998 Camry issue

I have a 1998 Camry V6 (1MZ motor) which has a very peculiar issue. I have had this car since new. VERY irregularly it will suddenly start to run roughly and the tacho swings around in the lower range, car loses power and the motor just manages to keep running while stopped at the traffic lights. I then pull over( in a side street) and turn off the engine for a while( say 5-15 mins...varies). Then it will start again and runs perfectly. You would think this issue is a constant one but the weird thing is that it does this around once, maybe twice a YEAR and runs perfectly 99.9% of the time. Talk about being erratic! Waiting for it to happen again as it hasn't done so for around 11 months since the last time. Has anyone got any clue as to why this is occurring so infrequently?? It's been a terrific car for these 22 years. Why doesn't this issue occur all of the time or way more frequently? I am perplexed.

I had a '98 Camry, and it had this kind of occasional problem. I did the MAF and Throttle Body clean and that fixed it. Scotty has a good video on it, and it's quick, cheap and easy.

Though that solved my problem, in your case I would think it might be crud in the fuel system, especially if the car has sat idle for periods of time over the last 22 years - damn ethanol gas!
