Hey Scotty I got a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and I’m getting code p1713. What could that be exactly and how are these trucks with reliability I got it for free from a friend with 212k miles

I don't work on diesels much as they're not as many out there and are more reliable (mfg, model exceptions).
With those miles and if the trans hasn't ever been rebuilt... I'd look for a good trans mech to rebuild it... should be around $1k. But only if you need the truck and everything else about it is good and fills your needs and you got it at a good price. And yea, might be able to drop pan and replace some solenoids to fix it.... but there's a lot of wear and I wouldn't... kinda like putting new tires on when you have worn out bearing.
