I have an automatic 2001 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner with a 3.4 V6 motor. The motor has power in the accessory and start positions but when I go to start it, all of the power clicks off as if a circuit breaker is in place and it goes dead. If I disconnect/connect the negative cable, the power is restored but it still shuts off when putting the load on it to start it. I had both the battery and started tested and both are fine. Its bound to be something simple...Please help
Check the cables attached to the starter.
Those cables are tight
Start looking for shorts. Something is burning out the relay.
Are you familiar with this exact issue, especially the power shutting off and having to reset????
In fuse box under hood..."starter relay"...easy test is to swap it with horn relay (assuming your horn works). Relays go bad internally and can stick.
There are several fuses in that box that are interconnected to the starting system.
I changed the starter relay and it ran for a few days, I havent driven the truck in 4 days, I went to start it again today and it wouldnt start and everything on the dash shuts off like a circuit breaker. I went to the process of disconnecting/connecting battery and it wont start.
Its got to be something simple, I want to remedy it myself before going to the mechanic
Check/tighten ground straps and was relay replaced with quality one?
