Is a 2001 toyata Mr2 worth buying? The car is mint with 37k miles on the clock . They are asking 14k..thoughts ? What would maintenance costs look like?

I wouldn't pay that for it. Of course maintenance will be a bit more on it as it is mid-engine. Be sure you sit in it to see if you even like it as they are VERY tight interiors. Scotty compared it to being in a coffin, and he isn't wrong.
Even with that mileage, I'd be well under $10k before considering.
