We have a2001 Maxima SE with 140,000 miles. Drives like a charm and the automatic shifts effortlessly, better than a new car. However, it grunts and hesitates briefly when we turn it over. Has a new battery and I make sure the headlights and eletronics are turned off when starting. Still hesitates a little but start when the key is turned. Sounds like the start of something but I can't tell what. I purchased a new starter motor but it a pain to install so I'm a bit hesitant.

That thing is 1/4 century old, it could be a lot of things. Do a voltage drop test on your battery cables, test the starter, and test the ignition switch. Also check the battery. New parts cannot be presumed to be good.
