my girlfriend has a 2002 beetle and just today the cruise control started acting really weird. It'll speed up and slow down around the speed i set it at. Any ideas on what could cause this? anything bad that could happen mechanically because of it?

Don't use the cruise control if it's acting wonky. It's potentially a life-threatening issue. You need someone to run enhanced diagnostic scans, and live data. It's some kind of electrical issue, perhaps a new cruise control module, perhaps something more serious. You won't know until the vehicle is scanned, codes recorded, and then the diagnostic hunt begins.
