I have 2002 Ford Explorer that the service engine soon light keeps coming on and off. I took it to autozone where they scanned it and said it has the code p0442 and suggest I replace the evap vent control valve because when I try to put gas in the vehicle it shuts off every 5-10 cents I put in and when I try to drive it cold it sounds like I have some sort of vacuum leak. The guys at autozone say if I replace this part it should fix both problem. What’s your opinion?
First of all, congratulations. You've beaten the odds on time and reliability for this year and model. You must have done many things right. CarComplaints.com says about the 2002 Ford Explorer (and I quote): "The 2002 Ford Explorer is hands-down our worst vehicle on record. 'Avoid like the plague is putting it lightly.'" https://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Explorer/2002/
Looking at the enginecodes.com link above provided by InThrustWeTrust, I'd start with the cheapest thing: Get an OEM gas cap. It could be that simple.
Scotty's always saying start with simple and cheap. It's good general advice. And if that doesn't work, then move up the list.
I agree.
If I were you, I would go through the links and start doing the simple stuff, including what they said if its in here:
