Scotty,
Help! I've been watching your videos for a while now. I'm a single woman living in a tiny town of 500 people with very few mechanics. After watching you, I almost don't trust anyone else to touch my car until I've asked my questions.
I bought the car from my niece, the only other owner, in April 2015 when it had almost 100,000 miles on it. She did everything by the book with regards to maintenance, including replacing everything suggested by the manufacturer for the 100,000 mile check up.
I have had no problems with the car at all and have done literally nothing to the car but buy new tires and get regular oil changes. There are a few minor "old car" issues like the passenger window not rolling up and the map lights giving out. It still rides great, the interior is perfect, I'm able to keep it in a garage, and it gets 28+ mpg on the highway.
I learned from you that everything eventually wears out; I'm thinking I need to at least replace the timing belt and possibly the spark plugs? What basic things do you suggest I replace? I know not to change the motor oil at this age and mileage.
The only other thing is a "hitch" in the transmission. When I go from park to reverse, I have to wait a beat and the whole things shifts rather strongly. When I go from reverse to 1st, and I have to wait a beat and it does the same thing. After that, it shifts perfectly. I once took it to a mechanic who said I could spend $1,800 to fix it, or I could be gentle with it and learn to live with it. I'm living with it.
The only other issue happens once every blue moon. Sometimes, the power will just give out when I'm driving down the road. The dash lights come on, I can tell it's losing power, and I coast to a stop. I crank it right back up, and it performs for months like nothing ever happened.
I appreciate any suggestions you can give me. I will be driving to Nashville the middle of March and I have seriously thought about coming to see you and have you look at my car.
When is the last time the transmission fluid and filter was changed? Doing that might help but I would still safe the old fluid to be on the safe side. Check all your wires and connections to see if you have any problems there.
Thank you for your suggestion. 🙂
I would at least check the transmission fluid level and check condition of the fluid. Has the car been scanned for codes to get possible clues about the engine cutting out?
Contact Scotty per the FAQ. I believe he'll be leaving for Rhode Island in April an don't know how many openings he has until then.

Thank you for answering and for your suggestions.
For the engine cutting out, safely check battery terminals are tight. With that old a car, the terminals and terminal connectors could be rusty and loose. If they are loose just by the touch, they have a potentially of losing connection while driving.
