2002 VW beetle
i have a vw beetle I want to cut the springs on...how many coils for 1.5 inch
- I don't advise doing that. If you want to lower it, I'd advise buying springs that are the correct size you start cutting them. You can room them and it could get dangerous. They could snap when driving
As Scotty said, its a bad and dangerous idea.
Another issue he didn't bring up is your spring has what's called a spring rate (stiffness), which is in units of lbs/in. Usually somewhere in the 150-250lbs/in range. So for a 200lb/in spring, that means it takes 200lbs of force to compress 1 inch. The higher the value, the harder it is to compress. The springs on your car were designed to operate at a certain length, with a certain stiffness. If you change the length of your springs without increasing your stiffness, you'll bottom out alot, and the handling will be awful. If you want to lower it you really should get legit lowering springs that are stiffer. Look at forums for your car to see what people say works well.
Just wait a while and they'll snap all on their own!
