I am looking at a 2003 ford f150 with 170,000 with factory engine, tranny, and shocks
it has a small dent on the passenger's side

Since it is a 2003 you should be avoiding the majority of the known issues with the 5.4. But it is still higher in mileage so don't expect to buy it for 1500 and not have to put more money into it. Also $1500 seems really cheep (unless it is a rust bucket), they may be hiding something. Like Scotty recommends, I would get it checked by a trustworthy mechanic. But if everything checks out, it sounds fine to me.
