2004 Camry SE Speed Sensor

I have a question. I was going down the road when the parking brake light & ABS lights came on and the speedometer went to 0. Lasted just a couple seconds but does it intermittently. The shop confirmed it's a speed sensor but said there are 2. They also said there was no way to know which one it was without replacing them. Is this BS?  Seems crazy there's not a test when they're wanting to charge $150/hr.

yes it is. These guys have no idea what they're doing.

They should certainly be able to tell which sensor is bad with a suitable scan tool.

Do you have any advice for which scan tool to use or how to test it?

Yes. Take it to a professional. Not a mobile hack.

Ok, I talked to someone else. They'll come to the house and do it. $60 + parts and tax. They said that, if their scan tool won't detect which one, then it may be a situation of replace a part and see. When I explained what the dash was doing, which I did with the other shop, he said it sounds like the wheel sensor.

this is an amateur as well

Any advice on what to look for so I don't get ripped off?

yeah, look for someone who knows what they're doing and inspires confidence. Rather than saying "I dunno. Let me throw some parts at it and hopefully something sticks." and then send you on your way, they should confidently say "no problem we'll take care of it. Let me keep it overnight. I'll just do this and that, we have tool on that cart over there... I'll just hook up my probes ... blah blah blah". And then they verify the repair, test drive it,  and make sure your car actually runs the way it should.
That's the difference between a "mechanic" and a hack.

This guy took it for a test drive but his scan tool didn't show which sensor it was. He said when he was driving it the car didn't act up.

right, so basically "I don't know" instead of "let me find out". The scan tool didn't tell him how to fix it and that was the end of the story for him. This is a rookie.

Having owned that exact car I know a good scan tool can reveal which sensor it at fault. Tools are only as good as the person using them.

and if your scan tool can't do it, you can always test the sensors yourself.

Do you have any advice for which scan tool to use or how to test it? The guy came and checked, but his tool didn't show anything. He took it for a test drive, but it didn't act up. Dealer said it'd be like 3 weeks before they could look at it.
