Hey Scotty I live in Massachusetts and am buying a 2004 mini copper base model with 170k Miles for 500 bucks. It’s a manual transmission and it grinds going into 2nd gear. Synchronizer ring? Also I am getting it from Oregon and driving it over. The only real problem is that transmission grinding into 2nd. A mechanic cleared it to make the trip out here to Boston. Any thoughts?

Usual problem of manual transmissions. Does it grind even if you rev the engine a little before shifting? Is it better when warmed up? Sometimes more precise and gentle shifting in 2nd helps. Anyway, have it checked by a trusted mechanic or walk away.
