Hello,
My reliable 05 corolla has been making a creaking noise when I’m braking at slow speeds. The back right wheel (drum brake) It is not the brake bearing hub as I have replaced that. Noise has been there for a long time but I am finally getting sick of it. Any thoughts?
YouTube video with how it sounds here:
If the drum itself is out of round, you would get that kind of noise as the shoes grip more and then less as the wheel rotates, slowing as you get to a stop.
So is that a warped drum? Is it gonna need replacing, and what part needs to be replaced if that’s the case
First, try loosening the wheel studs, then re-tightening them with a torque wrench, criss-cross pattern. Overenthusiastic use of a air wrench has warped many a brake drum.
If that doesn't work, this is what you need to do - you just have to do the first thing and take the drum off (It would be a good idea to blow or brush any brake dust out while you're in there - just wear your Covid mask while you do it, brake dues is NASTY to lungs).
