Got the highlander in may with 142,000 on the 4cyl , automatic.
Did PM, oil and filter, plugs , pcv valve, air filter , and cleaned the maf.
After 2500 highway miles it was a quart and a half low. No leaks and no exhaust smoke.
Is this abnormal?

If you mean by abnormal, excessive oil consumption, I would say, yes.
Why isn't there any exhaust smoke.?
What can be done, besides an engine rebuild?
The catalytic converter is doing its job.
Change the PCV valve, if that didn't help, there is no fix but the engine rebuilt.
Any oil additive to try, that might help the piston rings seal better?
