Hey Scotty, I’ve got a 2006 Nissan Xterra Off Road with 224k miles. I’ve had it for almost a year now and I love the car, it’s perfect for what I need and has been extremely reliable. Yesterday, I filled up my tank and started driving home. I was stuck behind a big rig so I accelerated and passed them up. Right after I accelerated and got back in my lane my check engine light started blinking. I continued to drive for about 5-10 minutes until I realized that it felt pretty bumpy as I was going down the road, it felt way different then it normally does. So I pulled over and shut off the car. I pulled out the owners Manual and read that the blinking Service Engine Soon light was telling me that something was “misfiring” in the Emission Control System. I got out and checked if my gas cap was on correctly since I had just filled up my tank and it was, so I tightened it again and started driving home. Whenever I would go over 40mph it would start to feel super bumpy, so I drove slowly all the way home. Got home and parked it and I haven’t driven it since yesterday because when I started it to drive to work this morning it felt shaky and I did not feel comfortable driving it. Don’t want to do further damage… I love the car and don’t have a shit ton of money right now so I’m not sure what to do. I’m gonna bring it in to a shop on Monday I think, but please let me know what you think I should do if anything… Thanks a lot and let me know your thoughts. <personal info removed for your safety -mod>  I hope all is well!!!

What was the exact code?

It could be a lot of things. You can read the misfire topic in our FAQ for steps on how to diagnose the problem.

The easiest thing to check would be your air filter and spark plugs. But after 200k miles it could also be things like a failing fuel pump.
