Hello everyone,

I have 2006 Toyota sienna XLE 3.3L FWD with 177k Miles. The transmission occasionally slightly jerks when going from 2 to 3rd gear and 3rd to 4th. It happens when the RPM is at or below 2k. The transmission shift smoothly in all gears when the RPM is 2500 or higher. Also, The trans shift smooth when going into 2nd and 5th gear even at lower RPM like 2k. The trans fluid is bright red (cherry color). I cleaned the pan and replaced the filter/screen 5k miles ago and used the correct fluid (T-IV). I investigated the issue by the VIN on the trans and found that the trans is from a 2006 Toyota Solara 3.3L. Can this be a issue? the van is in very good condition and I would like to know my options. I appreciate any help.

Regards.

Yes if somebody swap transmissions just live with it as long as it works good enough as it was designed for a different vehicle that weighed less

Hi, Scotty,

I have driven 16000 miles since I bought it. The slight jerk happens occasionally and not all the time. If i let it change gears at 2500 RPM then it never happens. Should i be concerned or think about finding a used low mile transmission somewhere like LKQ online and have it swapped. Or should I just keep driving it. Also, for my knowledge; how and where should one find a used transmission (if on a budget). Thanks, your advice is appreciated.

Are you saying that your vehicle isn’t running on its original/factory transmission? If it continues to run, I’d get it reprogrammed by a Toyota transmission expert to run as designed from the factory (if that’s possible). If that doesn’t fix it, price out a junkyard transmission which was from the same model year as your vehicle & consider swapping it.

Did you have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic before you bought it? I wonder what else isn’t original in the vehicle.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I bought it 16000 miles ago. My local mechanic test drove it and it worked fine. Even now it works fine, but occasionally it has slight jerk only in traffic when the gear changes at a low RPM like 1500 to 2k. Other than that, it runs smooth and quiet. Everything else like engine is original, i matched the VIN.
I just want to know if I should be concerned or think about swapping it. Any suggestion on how to find a good used low miles Trans. Thanks for your help in answering these question.

If a mechanic did check it out, then like Scotty, I’d say just keep driving it. Don’t spend more money, just rev it harder & let it shift above 2500rpm.

I have a 2006 Sienna with 112K miles. I can say with great confidence that you have nothing to worry about. What happens is the transmission is in between shifting to the next gear. So, when you hit the gas it jumps to the lower gear when it was in the middle of shifting to a higher gear. I have owned my Sienna since brand new with transmission fluid changes every 30-40K miles with OEM Toyota fluid. My mechanic also road tests the van with every oil change and he said this is completely normal for the 5 speed transmission. Just keep maintaining the fluid, and you will have that car for another 177K miles!!
