Hello,
Sorry but this is a bit long winded.... 😥 😥
I have a 2007 Lexus gs350 awd with 110XXX Miles on it. I'm the second owner. About a year ago check engine light came on. I got the code read and it was P0017 sensor 1 bank 2. I wanted to fixed it but it would turn on and off all on it's own for weeks at a time.
A Bobby Rahal lexus dealership opened up close to me so I said, what the hey.....I'll just take it there and let them fix it since they have all the diagnostic tools to do it. I avoid dealerships but my job keeps me way too busy to screw around with it. Big mistake!!!
So i take it in and they charge me 300 bucks to do a diagnostic and 140 point inspection and come back with a 4800 dollar estimate for a laundry list of things. I asked what about the check engine light and they say it wasnt on so we didnt check.
I said I know that, it comes on and off.....that's why I brought it in so that you can use your machines and still find the code even though it's off. They give me a loaner vehicle, apologize and keep the car. They call me 2 days later and say they found the code and replaced the oil control valve. It's all good now! I go to pick it up and the first thing that happens when I turn it on is the check engine light pops up.
They take it back apologize again, give me a loaner and call me 3 days later. Said that the technician pulled both control valves to check them and then replaced the wrong side when he was putting them back in. The correct one is in now car is good.
I drive home and the stupid light comes back on as I pull up to my drive way. I'm getting a little bitter now so I ask for serenity, drive the car back the next morning and they are all completely baffled and so am I!
They take my car back in tell me they are calling the "top local tech" to solve the problem. They give a loaner, call me to ask if they can keep the car longer and do a deep dive to get to the bottom of it, and I say fine.....just fix my car.
1 month later they call me to tell me that I need a new timing chain and it's a 5000 dollar job. I ask for my car back and a refund for the work that didn't fix it and they comply. That is why I'm here! The car has no signs of timing issues as far as I can tell.
All that the dealer did for me was take a light that used to come on and off all on it's own and made it permanent. That light hasn't shut off since they had it last.
Could you guys maybe shed some light on this for me?
Please advise,
Sam
Do you have access to live data to read the advance ignition timing? If so, check the timing on idle and see if it jumps around couple of degrees or stays the same.
Check here for more information:

I do not have access to live data. I will look into how to get live data to check the timing on idle as you suggested.
Thanks
