I just got a 2008 Impala for $800 with the 3.5 engine & 4sp tranny. 131k miles & bought it from the original owner with supporting documentation. Intend to fix & resell it. Concerned about the tranny: Shifts fine at low speed but sometimes won't go into 4th when traveling at over 50 mph. When this happens, I briefly let up on the gas, then reaccelerate, which shifts tranny into high gear. Fluid is clear amber in color # not low. Seller said tranny filter may never have been changed. Otherwise car runs fine.  Car also has leaking power steering assembly ( suspect a bad pump &/or steering rack), bad battery, solid but dirty interior. Creature-features all work. Good body, glass, tires except one may have a bad valve as it has a slow leak.
