2008 PT Cruiser electrical short due to various aftermarket accessories

Hi Scotty, been a fan for a couple years now. I'm coming to you I'm kind of a desperation. I've been through hell and back through covid even living out of my other PT Cruiser for a few months until I was banged up really bad in it. It was a two thousand six. Now I have a 2008 and I thought for $2,000 if it's nice Brazilian family that sold it to me it would be kind of my Saving Grace. But three months ago the aftermarket horn the main horn went off on its own. A friend of mine and I thought we found a cut in the wire and that was the issue resolved. The next morning the horn was blaring on its own and I had to run outside and pull a 30 amp fuse out of the run from the battery to the horn. Then that day the car shut off on me as I was driving. And subsequently that kept happening. Also  I would hear the relay  in the front  passenger fender where the main horn was installed  and it would be going off  and clicking when the car would shut down .  I disconnected  that horn  from the battery and also from the second source of power that was going to the relay.

But it had already went into limp mode and not shifting. I took parts of my 06 PT Cruiser because '08 was pulling a code of bank 1 sensor 2 .I change the camshaft sensor change the air intake sensor I cleaned up the throttle body. I got DQ and dielectric and another friend and I went down to the trans change the couple sensors there and cleaned most of the wire harnesses. And I cleaned some of the grounds. I would turn the radio down and when I start the car the radio would come on blaring.

Also car pulled Fuel sensor code. Anywho the car is still in limp mode and not shifting. And shuts off sometimes. And it wants to overheat now if I go pushing it till about three or four miles. I relied and hoped on many mechanics to come out. But LOL I don't know what they're smoking 🚬😉or doing over here in South Florida , but they were not coming through. I have lined up three or four different mechanics through asking around. One guy feels that my catalytic converter is clogged . Then he has not been answering back for a good week now whether I can bring my car by his shop again. Mind you I feel there's a short somewhere because all of these symptoms started happening after the main horn went blaring. And from what I've researched and ask around about. There was a recall on the horn pad\clockspring on some PTs. But the times when my PT has shut off I've gotten out and got under the hood and messed around  the tipm and that PCM and wires in that area and the car has come back on.

So this morning I managed to get her to another shop , barely 😣😒🔫 having to stop two times for like 10 or 15 minutes let the car cool down. This guy ran his Snap-On scanner on her and it was pulling some stuff about the transmission. I tried to tell him and all due respect and I know he's the mechanic but this is what I've been going through with the car and I tried to give him a rundown of everything. And I've watched a lot of your YouTube channels and a couple of other guys. On PT Cruisers. Now I know you're not a huge fan of a PT Cruiser LOL. But I am in dire straits and I've been through an unbelievable amount of hell and back last year and this year combined . ( I kind of don't want to say all the hell that I've been through. But I need a true miracle of God right about now)😇🙏. I don't have money for a new car. I barely have any money left. Yeah I need my car in order to get back on my feet.

So I was at this guy's shop before they even opened up it's 7 a.m. And when he showed up he put on Snap-On scanner but not the verus one. He was saying something about transmission showing up. He took my car without me in it for a ride around the area. I came back and started talking about he feels it's the timing belt and that it is slipping!?!? And I strongly feel that this is a shop trick. Because I've had two other PT Cruisers before and this car was running totally strong nothing wrong with the transmission nothing wrong with it gliding along prior to the main horn going off and then it going into limp mode and not shifting along with times that it would just shut off completely.

Note: Also there's a parasitic drain from the battery so I've kept having to unhook the battery any time I've used it for short rides to the store. Because I've recharged it a couple of times already.

Sorry if I've thrown information here and there. But I'm just trying to convey everything that's been going on and this point . I know there is a solution I just don't have the scanners and tools. So I'm praying (and begging🐒🐕) Please is there Anything U or anyone reading this can help in getting my Car back running💃💪. Please feel free to Call me

I'm feel sorry for you but reality is that 3000 pounds of scrap metal will have more than just electrical problems...

Good thing you only payed $2000, though thruth be told you obviously haven't asked your local junkyard the actual value which should be right around 100 bucks.

What an experience... It could be a lot of things, what is the mileage? That could help members and Scotty to answer your questions. Good luck

Wow, sorry you are going through such a ****-storm with your car. A couple thoughts - how does the engine run with the engine in neutral? If it starts, idles and revs up without hesitation, it's probably not the timing belt - probably. As far as the transmission codes, it is entirely possible that the transmission could be throwing the car into limp mode.

The overheating concerns me. The last thing you want to do is overheat and blow a head gasket. Were there other engine symptoms before - like losing/refilling coolant, burning oil, drivablility problems?

Hi Lisa, sorry about what's happening with your vehicle. When you said you pulled codes on your car, do you mean the mechanics did it or you scanned it yourself? Feel free to post the codes here if you have access to a scanner. Also feel free to record video or take pictures with your cell phone of your vehicle about anything that might help us figure out what's wrong.
