I am thinking about buying either a 2009 or 2010 Yukon, but am wondering if the AFM is a big deal. If it is, does the plug in deactivator work? Is there any damage if the previous owner drove with the AFM for years? Or would I be better off purchasing a different 2004 yukon with no AFM?

If it is, does the plug in deactivator work?

It works, but after thinking about and reflecting on AFM deactivation for the past 2 years, I think the best way to deactivate is to turn off the cylinder deactivation via software;  it can be turned off via HP Tuners software (very easy to do actually) and most performance shops should have access to this software.  If one is motivated, they can even get the software and turn it off themselves - I just am not aware of the cost.

Anyways, I’d rather go that route to deactivate the AFM than to leave a dongle plugged in the whole time while I am driving. Some older versions of the dongle even drained the battery when left plugged in.

But the best bet is to avoid AFM altogether especially on a used vehicle, since you don’t know what kind of wear and tear was already done if the previous tuner did not disable it.  Even with AFM disabled, the hardware is still there and can still fail (due to leaks, software glitches, poor build quality of the parts, especially the AFM lifters).  Disabling AFM only reduces the probability of failure but does not eliminate it.

thankyou! Very helpful. It's vehicles before 2007 that don't have AFM, correct?

Stick to the 2nd Gen model years 2000-2006.

Yes, it is.

There are some kits out that you can use to deactivate the AFM, but the issue is the previous owners, if they have not deactivated the cylinder deactivation, it might result in destroying the engine.

This is a better option.
