2009 RAV4 randomly shut off

2009 Toyota RAV4 2.5 102k miles. Was driving and it sputtered and died while in traffic. Towed it home and checked it out, I have spark but no fuel sprayed starting fluid got it to turn on and then off. Only have a p0420 catalyst code. I checked all fuses associated with fuel and ignition and there all good so I got to the results that it's either the cop/n relay or the fuel pump. So my question is does anyone know exactly which relay is the cop/n relay under the steering wheel fuse box?

Your owner's manual should document the relay layout if it's not inside the relay box cover. You could also try applying 12 volts directly to the pump to see if it works.

Free access to a repair manual for your car is available at charm.li:

@chucktobias the car didn't have a manual when I bought it last year. The cover doesn't show any of the relays. It's not easy supplying 12 volts to the pump because in this model Toyota did not put a door hatch so I would have to drop the tank to do that. So I will see what I find on charm

I hooked up a good autel scan tool that could engage the fuel pump and I hear the relay clicking but I don't hear the pump. Is it safe to say my issue is the fuel pump?

Either that or the relay contacts are bad or there's a problem with the wiring to the pump.

@chucktobias ok well I guess I gotta do the tank to know for sure

You'd have to do that to replace the pump anyway. Be sure to install an OEM pump if you replace it.

@chucktobias will do. Thanks

no. measuring the fuel pressure is the safe way to test. If it's not turning on, it could still be wiring, bad ground, etc.

@imperator I'm not getting any fuel pressure at all

It took less than 10 seconds to find it, direct from Toyota, with a simple internet search:

https://www.toyota.com/owners/warranty-owners-manuals/vehicle/rav4/2009/

If that doesn't have the relay location the repair manual should.

@chucktobias thanks for the info. Well look into it right now

If you've eliminated the electrical, it's your fuel pump.  https://youtu.be/DxbWiZIm5DU

@hixster electrical is good so I'm trying to price a OEM replacement
