- Scotty! I have a 2010 hyundai sonata with the 4 cylinder engine, 179,000 miles on it! About a month ago i was driving it and it shut off as if the alternator went out. Started it right back up and made it home but noticed it had lost half if not more of its power. The engine would rev high but not power seemingly. After i pull into my drivewsy it shut off and this time would not start. Ran a cheap scantool and it tripped a camshaft code, done my research and ended up replacing the camshaft position sensors. Which helped but car still wouldn't start. I got a new starter and now the car starts instantly but theirs a noticeable knocking coming from the engine that wasn't present at all before. Please help!
My daughter has this car. here's 2 options.
1. Buy a decent scan tool and provide more info to us as needed and more history on car (every been low on oil, overheat, etc). pro, cheaper. con, time consuming and potentially won't be able to resolve via forum troubleshooting
2. Search for a good indy to fix it. Pro, it'll get fixed. con $
3. Trade
It was ran low on oil once but not for long. I got the oil changed and car ran fine for about 2 weeks before all this happened. I will invest in a better scan tool. Im just curious as to why it started knocking when it has never knocked before? My friend who has some experience with cars (not a licensed mechanic, just does work here in there) said that it sounded like a rod knocking. Again though, i never had any knocking sounds even when the car shut off for the last time.
A very useful clue... based on that, the model car and miles... I'd recommend my 3rd option... but you have to decide as you know your situation much better than I. And yea, that low oil 2 weeks ago could be the problem as it didn't do your bearing any favors.... but only way to tell would be disassemble and inspect bearing...way more than the car is worth.
Okay thank you. I was thinking of just selling it for what i could. I paid 2,400 for it with 159k on it. I was thinking of trying to get 1,000 out of it. Im not experienced with these kind of things, would that be a fair asking price?
Depends on your location. Find online price for your location (and car condition), price a few hundred higher and take the best offer you get.
I just talked to someone who said it could be the timing chain since the position sensors went out. Does that sound right?
It doesn't to me. Reason, it was running,. you turned it off then wouldn't start. It would not run with broke chain and doubtful it would break on starting attempt and has nothing to do with the symptoms prior to it not starting. Sorry.
To be honest you are well past the car's trouble free mileage after 160 170k miles they start to fall apart so I would get a new car as soon as possible. Like a 2006 Camry or 2013 Accord or something.
