Mechanic says converter is getting bugged is reason for code. I think the converter is getting plugged from oil burning. Is the only fix to replace the converter? Will not replacing harm the engine?

You could try one of the converter cleaners on the market but eventually the oil burning will permanently ruin it. If the converter clogs up you'll have performance problems to the point where it may barely run. An engine is an air pump and if the exhaust is plugged up it can't produce power.

How do you know it's from oil burning? Have you done a compression and leak down test on the engine? What codes are you getting?
