[Solved] 2011 Ford Focus - Indicator lights on dasboard

My car (2011 Ford Focus) has 177,000 miles. Today I was driving and the check engine light came on, then a few minutes later a light in the shape of a wrench also came on. I took it to autozone and had it scanned. The guy said it was the mass air flow sensor. When I asked about the wrench light, he said that just meant service soon, but the owner's manual says it's throttle/powertrain. Driving home it felt like the transmission was slipping, which it has never done before. I need some help figuring out what to do. Monday morning I could take it to the local Ford dealership, I could take it to a independent mechanic in my area, or I could take it to a transmission shop in my area.

What to do???

I had Mass air flow sensor codes way back.

If you are handy, you may want to try this first. The sensor is mounted between the filter box and throttle body. It's held in by two phillips screws.

I took mine out, bought some Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner. Cleaned it thoroughly. Used WD40 Professional contact cleaner on the connections on the sensor and the connector, then re-mounted them both. I cleared the codes and voila! No more check engine light!

What was the trouble code?

Just don't go to the dealership, or chain.

You are correct. The autozone guy is confused because that's what the icon means on other cars.

The guy at Autozone; what do you expect for $12/hr?

Well he wasn't hired as a mechanic. He's there to help shoppers find what they need, so you can't really be mad at him. But just keep that fact in mind when asking them for mechanical advice.

The trouble codes were P0102 and P0113

search them on obd-codes.com. It usually provides good troubleshooting steps for solving them.

The trouble codes were P0102 and P0113. The print out he gave me says that I also need a new thermostat.

2009 Focus..wrench icon comes on after like 10 minutes of running. Just did oil change..and this just started at 119k miles. It seems to run just fine and at auto zone it never threw any codes. Clearly not a mechanic here. Hoping for some ideas. Thanx. {black}:idontknow:
