Had an oil change 198867km. I do a lot of idling and lots of in city driving due to the nature of my job. My fuel trims are in normal range (-4% to 5%). 0% to 3% on idle. No exhaust smoke. No drivability issues.
1. Should I change the oil now?
2. Or can I change it later and change it sooner and more frequently (every 5000km)?
Thanks
In your case, change the oil at 5000 km is a good idea. Also don't forget to do Italian tune up.
I’m with @yaser on this one. A little oil dilution is normal if everything else checks out, but will usually be worse if you do a lot of city driving and idling. Oil dilution to any degree mandates more frequent oil changes. And you can mitigate it to some degree by regularly getting it out on the highway for a good long drive at speed.
@Dad2LM2 Just curious and wanting to learn, how does taking a car out on the highway for a good long drive at speed help with an oil dilution problem. Does the increased circulation of the oil allow the gas to be released from the oil in some manner? Or..... Could you explain? Thanks.
A couple factors at least. On cold start (when fuel accumulates in oil the most), the fuel mixture runs richer, whereas on the highway at operating temps, the engine generally runs leaner, allowing less fuel to enter the crankcase. Also (and maybe more important) gas is volatile at high temps and evaporates off when the oil temp is high.
@Dad2LM2 Thanks
The last part of your question is baffling. "Or can I change it later and change it sooner..." What does that mean?
Change it 5000km after last oil change, and use that 5k km interval for oil changes going forward
That sounds excellent. Don't forget a new PCV valve too.
I recently removed and cleaned my PCV valve. I may not have installed incorrectly. I see people gently tapping it back in with a hammer. (See 7:23 https://youtu.be/5I4valwJquU). I didn't do it that way i just plugged it in so to speak.
1. Could that have been the cause of the gas smell from oil?
2. Must I changed the oil immediately?
