I wanted to give you a update on the 2012 VW Passat. We have charged the battery, tested the charging and starting systems which are all working as designed. The technician dove deep into the electrical system and unfortunately, he found that the transmission control unit is leaking fluid into the electrical connector and causing a draw. In order to repair this we need to first replace the transmission control unit and repair the fluid leak.We than will need to replace the whole vehicle wiring harness due to the fact that Volkswagen does not offering just the transmission wiring harness . This is a very detail oriented and lenghty repair, inwhich Parts and Labor would come to $ 11,996.00 plus taxes.

This be beyond sad on so many different levels. Almost no one can afford a 12K repair bill on any car. Especially in this case with this family.
You could get another opinion from an independent VW mechanic, but if that is indeed what needs to be done the cost of the repair is likely going to exceed the car's value by a wide margin no matter what shop does the work.
You’ve entered the Land of the Money Pit and better off cutting your losses while you can. VW like other German automakers make it hard to fix stuff on their vehicles, and out of warranty they all become endless money pits. That’s just the way it goes.

This is an extreme example of why Scotty generally tells people to avoid buying modern Volkswagens. Obviously the thing to do is look for another car, it's not worth putting that kind of money into this thing even if you had the cash burning a hole in your pocket.
It's amazing to me that this Mr. Miller could actually give someone with 10-year-old VW an estimate for $12,000 in repairs with a straight face. The mind boggles.
Insure the hell out of it and push it off a cliff.
