Hi, I have a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5 with a 6 sp manual transmission. Recently I had to replace the clutch ($1600) and a little while later the reverse pops out of gear will not stay in reverse gear. Going forward everythg works fine.  The car has only 70k on it How much do you think it would/ should cost to fix.  I would try it myself but looks a little too complicated.

I was checking a little online and one answer would be that the reverse shifting fork in the trans may be worn. The guy also replaced the reverse idler gear and reverse slide gear but don't know how much i'm looking at to rebuild it.

This is an indication that the synchros that serve the reverse gear are worn out, not allowing the trans to go fully into reverse to begin with.  Only fix is a transmission rebuild, seals and synchros.

"Bad or improperly installed trans mount. Allowing the tail of trans to lift up when reversing, which pushes against the shift rod in the wrong direction and pops the trans into nuetral."

The shift forks are cast iron with bronze pads brazed onto their ends and they sometimes wear out.  Still, it needs to be disassembled to be repaired, shift forks or synchros.
