2012 Taurus SHO

Scotty I’m trying to NOT get ripped off. My son has the car out of town and it suddenly started making a metal to metal rattling sound underneath. Slow while going slow and then faster as he goes. A meineke shop was the closest place and they quickly said “transmission is shot”. I wish I could attach the video he took with good audio of the sound. A mechanic friend of mine listened and thought more of a driveshaft or axle made more sense with the sound. Right around 105,000 and no problems since I bought it with 7,000 miles in 2013

He needs to get that thing to a real mechanic, not a chain muffler and brake shop (or any chain shop for that matter). Search for independent mechanics in the town where he broke down.

A noise like that can be caused by a lot of things. In my case several years ago I experienced a similar sound while on a trip. Upon examination it turned out to be due to a rusted disc brake backing plate (dust shield) that came loose and was making a racket while driving. I just took the stupid thing off and left it off. Total cost of repair: $0.00.
