Hi there.
2012 Toyota 4 runner. 145,000 kms.
Started a ticking noise at about 95,000 kms.
No trouble codes from scan reader.
Tried fuel injector cleaner with no success.
Oil changed every 8,000km and checked regularly with no leaks.
Still starts and runs with no issues.
Just a ticking noise that is coming from the engine and seems to be loudest around the drivers side wheel well. Can be heard when at idle loudest and at cruising speeds.
Any thoughts on what it is?
appreciate all you do.

Found a video of a 2015 4runner with the exact same noise on Youtube. Here it is: https://youtu.be/1iY6_ZH3w7M https://youtu.be/1iY6_ZH3w7M
Make a video on YouTube and post the URL here and I will watch. Pray it's an exhaust tick from the manifold gasket leaking and not some type of serious internal engine problem

Sorry Scotty. Think I may have doubled up on the YouTube link. Appreciate you offering to listen to it. Hopefully, it nothing too major.

Hi Scotty. Just saw your “end of Toyota reliability” video. This is the exact sound that my 2012 4Runner is making. I happened to also contact a Toyota mechanic. He also said it was normal and nothing to worry about. Mentioning that even the new ones make this sound. Other Toyota forums say the same thing. Looking forward to a follow up on the 2020 4Runner in your video. Any ideas/thoughts on what is could be?
Thanks graham Holladay for your reply. I think it’s something different though.
I'd bet it's a leaking exhaust manifold. I have a 2004 4R with the same noise. The bolts are rusted up on mine so i'm hesitant to change it. It's gonna be a bitch of a job and i hear they can go bad again. From what i understand it's not all that bad for the truck as long as you don't mind the noise.
