Scotty, my wife's Escapes rear end growls when the car is in motion, no matter how fast or slow. It doesn't do it in reverse. My mechanic says he thinks it sounds a bit louder since last years inspection. Do you think it's coming from the rear or could it possibly be wheel bearings? Thanks, Carl

If it's 4 wheel drive, see if putting it in or out of 4WD alters behavior - that would point to rear diff. If the growling changes pitch as the vehicle speed changes, the odds are rear wheel bearings.

It's AWD. I'm assuming it's always in 4WD. Nothing to engage or disengage it.

OK, if AWD, get all 4 wheels off the ground. Get a mechanics stethoscope if necessary to find out where the noise(s) are coming from.
