I have a 2013 ford fusion probably one of the rare ones with a stickshift 6 speed. It has 177k miles on it and when I go to shift it into 4th gear is when I get the growl noise but the noise goes away once I get it in any other gear. Im hoping its a exhaust leak or engine mount causing the noise but I have already had the engine mounts replaced a year ago.

That looks like a nifty device to find car noises. I do have a old car stethoscope that my father had when he was working on cars in the 1970s as well as half my tools are sk tools that were also bought in the 1970s. The car still runs and drives and I figure if the transmission was going out it would go out all the way? The growl doesnt happen in any other gear besides 4th gear.

I've seen transmissions make noise in only certain gears, it depends on how they're wearing out internally. However noises telegraph all over a car and a gadget like the ones Scotty has demonstrated should help zero in on the actual source. I remember him saying that the wired type works more reliably that wireless, even though the latter is more convenient.

You'll want to hang onto those old tools, it's tough and expensive to find quality tools these days! I have quite a few from back then as well.

Its almost time to park the fusion for the winter anyhow I live in Iowa and I like using my ford pickup or my jeep for the winter. But I also just purchased a 2008 toyota corolla for $2000 from a shop I know the guy and the shop did some work on the car but the customer has not paid for the work and the car has been sitting at the shop for 6 months. It runs good it has 140k miles on it and is a 5 speed manual. It has some rust and some small dings but thats to be expected for a car that has been in Iowa for 15+ years. I also indeed plan to hang on to those tools my father gave me. When he turned 70 he said he had no use for the tools. So now I have a toolbox and tools that are older than me!
