How do I change my rear hatch locking behavior

My parents have a 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor that will be my vehicle soon. The police version has some quirks, you can't open the hatch without hitting a button in the cab and it locks after closing it. Is there a way to program the car to not lock that hatch at all and not have to use the button and make the car respond to the button on the trunk?

Well that would require reprogramming stuff you need a pro mechanic to do that.

Would the local Ford dealer be able to do it would I have to go to somebody privately?

Ask them.

Like Scotty said, the point is you need someone with a dealer level scan tool to be able to do that level of modifications/reprogramming.

Try an independent mechanic first that works on American vehicles.  They may see enough Fords in their shop to have invested in the fancy, dealer-level scan tools.  You will save money over a dealer.
