2017 jetta engine knock

I have an update on my earlier question about my engine knock.  The knock is subtle and more noticeable in low acceleration.  My car is a manual 5 speed with 43k miles.  I changed the plugs and air filter at 42k miles.  I changed from Costco to Chevron gas, but no improvement.  I heard the coils can go out.  Is there a way to check them without replacing them?  Also, what is the likelihood the mass air flow sensor might be the problem?  I have been using the K&N air filter for about 40k miles in case that matters.

I loath K&N filters. That being said, MAF could be dirty from the K&N filter. Give it a clean and see what happens. Those "filters" are not particularly good at filtering out particles. If it do end up being one(or more) of the coils, you will have to check codes to see which one will need replacement. Of course it is recommended that you change all of them at once if that do be the case.

Thanks for the info. I keep hearing that without the check engine light being on, looking for codes is basically useless. Is that true???

Not true. Even if the light isn't on, codes can still be tripped. It's just not bad enough/not related to drivability functionality just yet. Also it do be a VW, they have a code for just about everything.

Scan it anyway..

It’s a VW, so odds are that you won’t be left disappointed..

LOL thanks. Now to find a cheap scan tool once I've cleaned the MAF.

If you’ve got a bunch of buddies who also own VWs, you may consider splitting the costs & buy the VCDS/VagCom software.
