- We recently bought a 2017 sorento 2.4 gdi (70k miles) from a dealership. We had to buy in a hurry after our 2011 compass showed signs of the cvt failing at 180k (goes into limp mode, throwing gear ratio and solenoid b stuck open code). Still debating on putting a trans in it.
- The sorento was great for a few weeks, now im noticing when accelerating (usually on an incline) i hear a weird chatter noise that sounds almost like valve noise, but it doesn't seem like the noise corresponds with the rpms. I looked into it and saw a long list of complaints about engine failure with kia 2.4 engines. Should i take it back to the dealer and try to get them to take it off my hands? Im still within the 6 month dealer warranty.
- We really needed 3rd row and awd, but now im worried i should have looked for better options.

So you went from bad to worse?
now im noticing when accelerating (usually on an incline) i hear a weird chatter noise
You can record it and we can try to listen.
now im worried i should have looked for better options
You really should have.
Kia GDi engines tend to be a nightmare.
You probably should have found a lower millage Toyota Highlander although they're expensive.
The sound wouldn't show up on video, but im pretty sure i found the problem. Checked the oil and it was 3 quarts low out of the 5 quarts it holds. We put exactly 2k miles on it so far. Its burning 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. Back to the dealership it goes. The dealership that sold it was the one doing maintenance on it prior, so not sure how that slipped by them accidentally.
It probably didn’t slip, pretty much all 2.4 GDi engines burn copious amounts of oil.
See if they can replace it under warranty / buy back the defective vehicle.
