2018 jeep renegade recall thoughts...

Hello Scotty. My girlfriend has a renegade that is notorious to burn oil as you know. Her car burns about a quart of oil every 500 miles and I caught that before she ran out of oil. (She bought it before we met or else she wouldn't had it). Recently she received a letter from Chrysler saying that they will need her to bring the car in so they can reprogram something in the car so it "fixes the oil burning issue." So my question is.. how is the reprogramming of the car is going to fix the burning oil issue? Isn't there something wrong with the piston rings or the engine already? So how will that fix that car's problem?

Thank you Scotty for your help!

A little side note.. her car burns coolant too so now that's another issue.. 🤦‍♂️ If you need to read the recall letter I could send it to you

Sounds like a band aid fix more than a permanent solution to me.

Reprogram might help a bit but it probably won't fix it completely.

You can post the letter here if you like. Take a picture of it, upload to imgur.com and post a link.

Here's the recall letter...

HAH! I love how these scumbags are pitching this as an "improvement" instead of what it really is ... fixing their f***-up.
Anyway, all you can do is hope for the best.

Isn’t the car still under warranty? I would try to convince them to take it back.

Unfortunately she's the second owner and she bought it all cash from a private owner...

Don’t let these thieves get away with it, document everything and if all continues to fail, threaten to sue......

It doesn't matter. You could be 100th owner, and you could have paid for it in goats. Warranty still applies.

Reprogramming won't totally stop it from burning oil.. the rings are probably junk. Sell, it, trade.ir in..something.. just make sure whoever buys it knows it burns oil. You're not gonna get much for it, but I wouldn't want to pass it on like that to someone else without them knowing. Usually , I'd fix it. But knowing those are fiat chrysler, no.

Lakeport21 has the ticket.  The rings are shot and probably so is the head gasket.  No programming change to the ECM is going to solve this problem.  The only thing that will solve this is when people stop buying badly designed and poorly made vehicles.  The buyers has the power.  Stop buying these lousy vehicles.

Warranty applies regardless what owner you are.
