I been noticing - particularly on cold starts, that the tachometer reads 1800 rpm when I'm still idling in [P]ark.... It promptly drops down to 800- rpm when it warms up after several minutes
seems quite high, i read some other forums and claim is is the New Normal?
Has anyone heard of this, can it be dropped a bit and how....also should it be dropped a bit?
what is the reason for the elevated RPM's
Thanks
The car computer adjust the RPM based on various inputs. When the engine is cold and the outside temperature is low, the rpm is high and it gets to lower rpm when the engine warms up. As long as you are in the range of 600-900 rpm after warm up, you should be fine.
Totally normal.
Completely normal. I have a few friends with late model Subarus that do the same thing on a cold day. You'll find it's S.O.P. on most cars for that matter.
It's even normal on my 1971 Ambassador, but cold fast idle on that vehicle has to be kicked down manually after warmup using the gas pedal.
