2021 Kia Forte GT reverse gear problem

Hello,

I have a ‘21 forte GT with the six speed manual. The issue I have (and I cannot find any insight online) is when I put the car into reverse, it does not engage the gear. When I slide it into gear, it goes and even trips the backup camera, but when I go to tether the clutch to back out of a space, the gear grinds. I do not have an issue in any other gear. Sometimes, putting the gear in first then reverse mitigates the issue; yet, annoyingly not always. Thank you in advance for any assistance 🙂

It's under warranty.  The dealer must fix this.  If it's not going into reverse correctly, it's either a bad reverse gear synchro or a specific clutch adjustment.  Hopefully, the latter.

If your car is under warranty, go to the dealer to replace your gearbox - as it sounds to me, it's probably done.

If you aren't covered under warranty, manual gearboxes on Hyundai-Kia cars are usually not bad at all, assuming there is no TCM or funny business like there is on some newer cars - Buying a junk yard one and installing, IMO, it isn't such a huge risk. As far as I know the Forte came the M6CF1 (check what's written on your bell housing! I could be wrong. - that's where identification symbols are located on Hyundai-Kia manuals) and it shouldn't be hard to find one like that in a junkyard with reasonable milage. I don't recommend ones with over 100k - on a Hyundai-Kia manual you MUST replace the fluid every ±60k miles or otherwise bearings will begin to whine.

Is the car under warranty?

I had such issue with 2002 Suzuki Swift sometimes. In such occasions I put in 1st and moved car just a little bit and then shifted in reverse. It engaged then normally.
