Which is better? Im looking at a 2021 Tacoma SR5. I might take the vehicle offroad onto the sand and steep hills. But which one is worth getting in the long run?

To be fair, the long term reliability is unproven of any brand new product.
But as Scotty always says, don’t get the 4WD if you don’t require it, as it’s another thing to break & fix.
With that said, Toyota makes excellent 4WD systems & you need to decide if you might use it or will use it.

if you think you need it then go ahead if you don't need it then don't. They add extra complexity. Also, if you just go in the snow once in a while 2wd is fine but if you seriously need a 4 X 4 system then Toyota makes an excellent AWD/4wd system.

Resale on 4wd is probably better
