[Solved] 5th gear burned out

Hello everyone. 2001 Honda Civic LX 5-Speed with a lil over 159K miles I took it to Meineke for free diagnostic as I told them about 5th gear and how it wouldn't engage but rather popped back into neutral. One of the techs test drove it and so after that they looked into it and they came to find 5th gear was burned out. According to them I need a clutch kit however they didn't give me an estimate as to how much it'd be parts and labor. My question is would a clutch kit be the only think to fix 5th gear or is there more to it?

My money is on internal transmission failure such as a bent shift fork, bad synchro, etc.

If it were a clutch issue it would be every gear. I don't see how that could be the case.

If you don't want to rebuild it, @Yaser is right. Shift around it.

True and to be honest all the other gears are good. I do drive in 4th gear but I've always wondered are there any other cons of it going highway speeds? I heard fuel economy is affected but are there any other cons?

As long as the RPM's are not up to anything crazy, MPG will be the only real concern. Just don't drive it like you stole it.

I don't think it is related to the clutch. Do you have the same issues with other gears? Probably not. This shows that your 5th gear is going out. Simply, do not use the 5th gear unless you want to spend a fortune to rebuild the transmission.

Nah nah I don't want that lolz and no issues with the other gears

Truth be told I Don't think the transmission is going bad cause I've looked up symptoms of a bad manual transmission and haven't had any of those problems just the final gear won't engage.

So what's your guess?

Synchro

Cause ye dude at Meineke was all like you'll need a clutch kit and a transmission rebuild and I'm thinking ummm... I doubt the tranny itself is going bad cause its just 5th gear that's the problem

  • First, I would try going somewhere else. Chain shops like Meineke don't have the best reputation and they are said to be almost as bad as dealerships in terms of trying to sell you the farm. Also, while some chain shops know what they are doing some don't. If what the guy said is true and it is actually that fifth gear is burned out then that has nothing to do with the clutch. It would mean that either fifth gear would have to be replaced or you would have to stop using fifth gear.

Oh okay and I've been using 4th gear instead its just only thing I dislike is fuel economy drop at highway speeds. 5th gear I will say without my foot pressed on the clutch pedal if I near the stick to the gear a sound occurs. Even in neutral the same sound occurs

Yes, I can completely understand how not being able to use fifth gear would be annoying, especially on the highway.
