Recently purchased a 95 wrangler 5 speed. As I put the car into reverse I heard two loud bangs then after I shifted to first and it moved forward I got to a stop sign and the engine would rev but the car wouldn’t move had to get it towed. I checked and the joints seem fine but my differential is leaking oil is it just my rear dif or could it be more?
Could be the differential or maybe the transfer case worn and going into neutral. It's not tough to take the cover off the diff to check it - see if there are busted/loose metal pieces floating around in there. I think by '95 the old AMC two-piece axle shafts were history but on earlier models I've seen those break loose with similar symptoms. (In fact I had that happen on an AMC Eagle ages ago.)
