Jeep Commander A/C compressor failed

Hi Scotty!

Love your YouTube Videos!

I just noticed an issue with my 2008 jeep commander 3.7L. My girlfriend mentioned she smelled something burning and some smoke coming from under the hood on her way to pick me up from work.

I looked under the hood and noticed some black stuff mixed with some oil oozing out of my A/C compressor. Is there a specific cause for this? And what would be the consequences of continuing driving without fixing it?

Hoping I can replace a part in the compressor instead of buying a whole new compressor

Thanks in advance! I appreciate your time!

From your description it sounds like the compressor has locked up, so it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately when this happens it usually contaminates the entire AC system with debris so most of the rest needs to be replaced as well. (Parallel-flow condensers and evaporators cannot be flushed out, you'd need a new expansion valve or orifice tube, new drier, and the vehicle is 13 years old so might as well replace the hoses as well while doing the rest of it.)
