Good day Scotty,
Greetings from Toronto.
I like ev's in concept.
I think in the future they will be great when the cost to buy goes down and charging times increase dramatically.
I hate the oil companies like most people and like the fact I could "fuel up" at home.
What I find funny are all the ev (usually Tesla) owners bragging about the savings compared to gas.
I bought new a 2015 Toyota Highlander.
I added up what I have spent.
In 6.5 years and 160000 km adding up the costs all fuel, one set of brake pads, one set of tires all my oil changes and recently I needed a new water pump.
Combined I am still at this pace about 6-8 years away from matching just the cost of a model Y.
Forget charging and tires and all the other maintenance (ev's require more maintenace than most people realize).
So even if charging cost 25% of gasoline I would probably need to replace an ev long before I would break even.
So in about 15-20 years from now when my Highlander needs replacing it will most likely be an ev.
Until that time no thank you.
Like you I am too cheap.
Take care.
Fred
If someone buys a Tesla and argues fuel savings, then they just don't want to say the real reason they bought it.
I would buy one for the design and the tech. And I would know I paid a lot of money for it, and that would be ok. But the cost vs MPG for another vehicle will always go to that other vehicle unless you are looking at hyper cars.
Yeah right now they don't make much sense at all. In 15-20 years from now, maybe, but we don't know really what direction they'll go in. Could be some kind of fuel cell. A lot of people, myself included, consider battery electric vehicles to be a dead end.
Definitely.
The basic concept of the EV is interesting but the execution to the real world is far away. Rushing unproven or thoroughly untested technology seems to be acceptable to some folks today but not for me, Thanks. It's kind of like the Covid vaccine; it sounds good if you like the kool aide but what are you going to do a year from now when you develop some horrible auto immune disease?
