Hi,
I got a P0420 issue for Honda Odyssey 2011 ~170k miles; I figured I'd give the lacquer thinner a shot.
Put a gallon of lacquer thinner in 7~8 gallon gasoline. Drove for an hour on highway. When I tried the car on next day, car stutters to start up. I had to try 3 times to get it cranking.
Did lacquer thinner cause an issue for rough start? I mean it didn't fix the cat problem, but now it seems started a new one 🙁
Where did you get the misguided idea to put lacquer thinner in you gas tank? There are dedicated CAT cleaners available specifically for this purpose. Lacquer thinner can cause severe damage to your engine, especially the plastic and rubber parts of the fuel pump and associated accessories, EVAP system, injectors, etc.
Scotty kilmer had one of his videos (with millions of views) says put a gallon of lacquer thinner in half full tank.
As well as his personal answer on other post about P0420 in this forum.
This is a really old video when Scotty had hair and he has since changed his tune. The video is over 11 years old.
haha true about the hair, but he did make a repeated statement about the lacquer thinner in gas on another post which was only 1~2 years old.
Then again, my car is also ~10yr old so his 'method' would still apply for my old car.
Either way, I really hope this rough starting goes away with new full tank of gas; and hope I didn't damaged anything 🙁
Me too, but depending on the lacquer thinner formulation, some of which contain acetone and other corrosive solvents, it can really do a number on the plastic parts that even your 10 year old car has lots of. Yours is not as bad as today's disposable nightmares, fortunately. For example, older vehicles used to have metal pcv valves. Today, they are all made from some recycled abs or pvc water bottles that actually melt when exposed to the chemicals in some lacquer thinners. Use the designated CAT cleaners for best results in getting rid of that P0420 and find out what is happening in your fuel system upstream that is causing the CAT to lose efficiency.
