are ford cars reliable then they used to be?
no
Not modern Fords. Put it this way - I would not buy a Ford product nor recommend one to others with the exception of maybe their heavy duty trucks.
Nope. Haven't been for a while now.
Ford products used to be, at best, decent.
most of their new products are NOT particularly reliable.
Ever since they moved to turbocharged engines, direct injection, and overly complex gearboxes - their reliability plummeted.
Depends, honestly. Modern Ford products? Unless you're talking about the F-250 and above, no, they're not reliable. Most are made overseas. The F-150 is made in the US, unlike the 1500 Silverado, but they've had problems with the 10-speed they jointly developed with GM and have class action suits against them for it. Considering they put a 2.7L turbo V6 in a full size truck as a base engine, they wear out quickly. That engine is smaller than my Ranger's 3.0, and it's in a compact truck.
Ford vehicles around the turn of the millennium were probably as reliable as Ford ever made vehicles. My Ranger is a '99, it has 285k on the odometer. The transmission was rebuilt at 251k, it hadn't been touched since it was made. It still shifted decent, but would get stuck in overdrive. The majority of that truck was designed in the 1980s, and updated as time moved on.
The Crown Victoria/ Town Car/ Grand Marquis is another notably reliable Ford product. I believe the underlying platform in that car, the Panther platform, originated in the late 70s and was consistently updated until Ford decided full size sedans aren't profitable anymore.
The older F-150s were reliable (talking early 90s trucks), I still see them driving around all the time. A friend of mine has one with over 200k on it. Half of some trucks are missing thanks to rust, but they still run and drive down the road. You probably won't find recent F-150s or the new Rangers on the road in 20-30 years. They're overly complex and not the quality they used to be.
