Are Maintenance Batteries a Thing of the Past?

Hi Folks,

I can't find a single company that makes serviceable batteries. Companies over her in the UK say it's because they leak when shipped. Reason is I got a 25+ year old battery supplied in my 1997 JDM Toyota Celsior and it's perfect. Problem is it's underpowered at 55ah when I think I need at least 70ah.

Company that made it are Showa Denko Industries, rebranded as Resonak/Hitachi Tuflong batteries a few years ago. I don't think they make a 70ah one that fits my car now anyway.

But AFAIK you can see here (deleted Amazon Japan link, doesn't work) they're still making them with the serviceable caps. But I've been looking for hours and weeks and can't find another company that does them.

Also the ones from the link say made in Japan, but the latest models they make under Hitachi are sealed & made in Thailand.

By serviceable do you mean being able to check acid level in the cells? Some batteries sold in the U.S. have removable caps for the cells underneath the label.

this refers to reserve capacity, not the cranking power of the battery.

Cranking power is measure in CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)

@Chuck Tobias Thanks, yeah I noticed they have these plugs that can be pried out of the whole section. I suppose there's no way of knowing until you buy the thing. I haven't really messed about with the Toyota Batteries. I wish I could get that Amazon link to work from Japan as they have wingnut hand tight type plugs on the battery.

@MountainManJoe Yeah it's CCA 450A which I forgot to add. Which I think is too low for a Lexus LS400 / Toyota Celsior.
